Revolutionising Homelessness with Sustainable Innovation

Homelessness is a global crisis, and traditional construction—slow, expensive, and resource-heavy—cannot keep up. We need a solution that intersects sustainability, cost-effectiveness, and human dignity.

The answer lies in our waste streams: repurposing scrap timber and GluBoard™ (a durable, laminated recycled cardboard) to create rapid, scalable housing.

The Opportunity: Adaptive Reuse

Construction sites generate tons of scrap timber, and cardboard waste is abundant. By diverting this from landfills, we can slash material costs and lower carbon footprints.

The vision goes beyond just materials; it is about adaptive reuse of space. Governments can repurpose disused sheds and industrial spaces to house these modular "wigwams" made of GluBoard™.

This approach offers more than just shelter—it offers agency. By involving the community in constructing their own safe environments, we create motivation and discipline. Rewarding leaders who build safe shelters can act as a catalyst, fostering a sense of ownership and joy within the community.

What is GluBoard™?

GluBoard™ is a laminated, corrugated cardboard panel designed for structural versatility. It transforms waste into a high-performance building material.

  • Eco-Friendly: Reduces landfill usage and creates a second lifecycle for paper products.

  • Cost-Effective: Significantly cheaper than virgin materials.

  • High Performance: Lightweight, insulated, and surprisingly strong when laminated.

The "Homeless to Homeful" Concept

The 3D modular concept focuses on dignity and speed.

  • Structure: Laminated GluBoard™ frames and walls on a 2.4m × 2.4m footprint (expandable).

  • Design: A pitched roof for runoff, raised timber base, and neutral finishes for aesthetics.

  • Modularity: Units link horizontally, allowing for clusters that can grow with the community.

  • Amenities: Optional plug-in kitchenette and bathroom pods, with potential for off-grid solar energy.

The Impact

Compared to traditional housing, the GluBoard™ modular approach shifts the paradigm:

  • Speed: Build time reduced from 8 weeks to 1–2 weeks.

  • Cost: 40%+ reduction in expenses.

  • Carbon Footprint: Drastic reduction from ~2,500 kg CO₂ to 900 kg CO₂ per unit.

Moving Forward

Scaling this requires collaboration. We need to organize scrap collection, partner with manufacturers, and advocate for policy changes that allow for experimental, sustainable housing.

Practical, affordable, and eco-friendly housing provides safety and hope. It turns waste into warmth and gives the most vulnerable a place to call home.
